Live performances from Jazz icons Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie and more recorded at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in 1969 Dizzy Gillespie was an American trumpet virtuoso and improviser. His beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop. In the 1940s Gillespie, together with Charlie Parker, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Jon Faddis and Chuck Mangione. Possessor of one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century, Sarah Vaughan ranked with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday in the very top echelon of female jazz singers. She often gave the impression that with her wide range, perfectly controlled vibrato and wide expressive abilities, she could do anything she wanted with her voice. Her legacy as a performer and a recording artist lives on, influencing today's class of jazz singers. Count Basie was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935 Basie formed his own jazz orchestra and led the group for almost 50 years. Many notable musicians came to prominence under his direction, including the tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, the guitarist Freddie Green, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams.
