Following the deaths of their parents, twins Anna and Lotte Bamberg are cruelly separated at the age of six. Anna is sent to live on her Uncle's farm in Germany, growing up in relatively harsh circumstances, while the sickly Lotte moves to the Netherlands and is welcomed into a loving home by distant relatives.
