Controversial Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda directs this bleak portrayal of the massacre of Polish officers, intellectuals and professionals carried out by Soviet troops in Katyn forest at the outset of World War Two. Artur Zmijewski stars as Andrzej, a young Polish army captain who is taken prisoner by the Soviet Army. At the prisoner of war camp where he is incarcerated, he carefully records in his diary the details of the brutal and inhuman events that take place around him, which culminate in the massacre of over 15,000 men over a three-day period. Meanwhile, his wife Anna (Maja Ostaszewska) and daughter Nika (Wiktoria Gasiewska) await news of him at home in war-torn Poland.
