Triple bill of thrillers. 'Emmett's Mark' (2001) sees Emmett Young (Scott Wolf) newly assigned to the homicide division, when he finds out that he has contracted a terminal illness. As he attempts to come to terms with his news, he is offered help by Marlowe (Gabriel Byrne), who offers him the chance to avoid the agony of a slow and lingering death by killing him at an unknown time. But the dying detective soon realises that the time he has left will not be peaceful.
In 'Poodle Springs' (1998), Raymond Chandler's private investigator Philip Marlowe (James Caan) seems to be turning over a new leaf with the advent of the 1960s: he is newly married to a billionaire's daughter, and relocates to the desert town of Poodle Springs. However, when a fellow detective is killed, Marlowe finds himself involved in a complicated case of murder, gambling, bigamy, pornography and dual identity - all or some of which are connected to his prosperous father-in-law.
In 'Primary Suspect' (1999), it is two years since his wife and partner Kenna were killed as the result of a failed drugs sting, and undercover cop Christian Box (William Baldwin) gets a chance for revenge when he becomes involved in another set-up. Ex-partner Nemanski tells Box that Reuben - the kingpin responsible for Kenna's murder - has been tricked into dropping off some money in a fake drugs deal. However, all does not go to plan; Reuben never shows, sending his wife, Nikki (Brigitte Bako), instead, and soon after Nemanski is found dead. When the money from the deal goes missing, Box becomes the primary suspect, and teams up with Nikki in an attempt to track down the elusive Reuben.
