Described as a "great, great Wembley Final" by BBC commentator Eddie Waring, this was David against Goliath as lowly Hunslet, after an appalling season, came so close to completing a sensational success against the mighty Wigan. Trevor Lake scored one of the greatest tries in the history of the event to give the Riversiders what looked like an unassailable lead in the second half, before a Hunslet fight back took them within touching distance of one of the greatest Challenge Cup Final comebacks of all time. There were so many great performances on the pitch that watching journalists couldn't even decide the man of the match, eventually awarding the Lance Todd trophy jointly to Brian Gabitas and Ray Ashby.
