The Treasures of Athens & Olympia is a 3 part arts documentary series. This DVD contains all three episodes. The series, narrated by Tim Marlow, opens by looking at how 5th century Greece experienced the 'Great Awakening' in art and architecture and, in the process, became the source of Western civilisation. The second episode investigates how Greek art and architecture, particularly painting, developed both during the Byzantine period and in the 19th and 20th centuries. And how 'neo-classicism' came to dominate our cityscapes. The third episode returns to the 'Great Awakening' in the 5th century BC and reveals how Greek artists, by putting human beings at the centre "of all things", began to portray form in a realistic rather than stylistic way. Filmed in Athens, Olympia, Delphi and Epidavros (as well as in the British Museum), The Treasures of Athens & Olympia is an accessible, visually stunning, selective celebration of Greek art and architecture intended to convey something of the pleasure of a visit to Greece.
