When the beautiful, young Ruth Barron (Kate Winslet) has a sense that something is missing in her life, she travels to India in search of self-discovery. There she falls under the influence of a religious guru. Her family, alarmed and desperate to regain their daughter, hire PJ Walters (Harvey Keitel) an American cult 'deprogrammer'. Two days later a reversal of power takes place when the battleground shifts from religion to sex. The spiritual pro is himself facing deprogramming as he falls for his avening angel.
